When STRANGERS WITH CANDY had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, Jerri Blank said, "Whoopee - on me!" Now that the movie has been in theaters, is now playing on Showtime and is now available on DVD, there's no telling what she might say!
The Comedy Central series’ original stars and creators Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert wrote and star in the feature film. Mark Roberts and Lorena David (EXTREME DATING, OUTTA TIME) produced the film along with David Letterman's Worldwide Pants. Joseph Middleton (American Pie 1 & 2, Legally Blonde, Old School) cast the film, which was filmed on location in New Jersey.
STRANGERS WITH CANDY is a dark satire of the moralistic after-school specials and will star Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a 47-year old former "user, boozer and loser" who returns to high school after three decades of hard living. The film will also include co-creators Dinello as Mr. Jellineck, a narcissistic yet fragile art teacher, and Colbert as Mr. Noblet, a strict history teacher with a predilection for Hummel figurines.
"This will be an even more twisted version of the television show," says producer Mark Roberts. "Long-time series fans will enjoy the film and newcomers won’t be left out." The three creators have even higher hopes for their new project: "We’re hoping to achieve in film what we achieved on television, which was upset our parents."
Sedaris, Dinello and Colbert have been longtime friends and collaborators. After meeting at Chicago’s Second City they relocated to New York and developed "Exit 57," a Cable-Ace nominated sketch comedy series that aired for two seasons on Comedy Central in the mid-‘90s. The trio also collaborated together on Wigfield, a novel published by Hyperion and now available in bookstores.
Sedaris, an Obie award-winning playwright, most recently had a supporting role in the feature Maid in Manhattan and recurring guest roles in HBO’s "Sex in the City" and NBC's "Just Shoot Me." Colbert is currently a writer and correspondent for Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show." Dinello’s film work includes "Plump Fiction" and has had roles in the NBC television movie "The Howard Beach Story" and Paramount Television’s "The Untouchables."
STRANGERS WITH CANDY was released by THINKFilm. In addition to its Sundance premiere, the film also screened as part of CineVegas.
